Summer 2023, Santa Cruz Shakespeare Fringe.
Exit! Pursued by a Bear is a play by Lauren Gunderson about a woman who decides to break up with her abusive husband by performing reenactments of their marriage before drenching him in honey and raw meat and luring a bear into their house. It was the Fringe show for the Santa Cruz Shakespeare summer festival in the summer of 2023. Asta designed the lights using the season’s rep plot, which had been put together by Marcella Barbeau for The Book of Will by Lauren Gunderson, The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, and King Lear by William Shakespeare.
The plot featured 8 moving LEDs, a few incandescent stage washes in a various shades of white, and four arrays of LEDs pointed variously at the stage and the trees in the background. Asta was also the light board operator and on-call electrician for the season, and got very good at focusing moving lights on an ETC Element console (unwieldy at best for that sort of thing).
They enjoyed their time working this season, and especially enjoyed the opportunity to support the interns in their spotlight show. Rebecca is a pleasure to work with!
